The short answer
Around Cadillac and the rest of northern Michigan, a website for a small business usually costs somewhere between a few hundred dollars and a few thousand in the first year: most often a one-time price to build the site, then a monthly fee to keep it online.
Here's what the money pays for, the usual ways to get a website and what each runs, and what ours costs. The prices are the ones posted by site builders, by web designers from Big Rapids and Reed City to Traverse City, and by a few others who come up in searches here, checked in October 2026.
The first year, side by side
The build plus 12 months of the monthly fee, from the prices on this page.
What you're paying for
- Building it. Usually a one-time price: the design, your words and photos put in place, and making it work on phones.
- Keeping it online. Usually a monthly or yearly fee for hosting (where your site lives), security and backups. Some plans include small changes too.
- Your domain. The name people type, like yourbusiness.com. About $10 to $25 a year.
Four ways to get one
-
Build it yourself
About $20 to $40 a month
A site builder's plans for a business run about $20 to $40 a month, or about $230 to $470 for the first year. It costs the least money and the most of your own time.
-
A local designer or small shop
About $250 to $1,500 to build
Monthly fees run from nothing to about $100. You work with one person or a small team who knows your site, and what's included varies a lot from one to the next.
-
A pay-monthly website
About $20 to $400 a month
There's no separate price to build it: you pay by the month or the year, from about $20 for a simple site to a few hundred for plans that bundle in more. It's easy to start, and over a few years it can cost more than a one-time build.
-
A larger firm or agency
About $2,000 to $6,000 and up
A team of designers and writers, often with marketing too, for bigger sites, online stores and ongoing advertising. Hourly work and monthly plans are extra.
What moves the price
- How many pages. One page costs less than five.
- An online store or booking. Selling or taking appointments online costs more to build, and often more each month.
- Who writes the words and takes the photos. It costs less when you provide them.
- How often it changes. A site that changes with the seasons (docks in and out, plowing, summer hours) needs more upkeep than one that stays put.
Questions to ask anyone who quotes you
- Is the domain registered in my name?
- What does the monthly fee cover, and can I cancel?
- What does a small change cost, like new hours or a new photo?
- If I leave, do I take my site with me?
